Will an Atv Fit in a Tacoma

I'm buying a 4wheeler this weekend and i'm thinking it should fit in the back of my truck (might need to lay the tailgate down) but does anyone out there have a 5' bed and know for sure if they can accommodate most ATV's in the bed or would i need to buy a trailer?

I have fit a blaster, ltz400 and my Honda 450r all with the tailgate down. The Honda needed to go up over the wheel wells because of how wide it is but all of them fit. Just lay the gate down and strap them tight. If it's a 4x4 quad and really big you may have some more difficulty.
Well I'm glad I found this. Now I have a reason to get rid of my tonneau cover.

My Polaris will not fit between the fender wells. Keep the tonneau and buy a trailer. After loading my Polaris in my F150 a couple of times that is what I did. So much easier and I have the bed for other stuff.

Tailgate down and if you're going to be loading and unloading it frequently you should look into one of these. ^^^^&^

thanks for the input, especially the photos. I'm buying a Honda Rancher (utility) so hopefully not as long as a sport. i do have a tonneau but im hoping not to have to remove it as it does fold all the way up against the cab. I have some ratchets so if it hangs off slightly, it shouldnt be a huge deal but we'll see. thanks

I load up all the time with a Honda Foreman 500 in a 6' box. To give you an idea I'm just a touch too long to close my tailgate. All of the rear wheel weight is still in the box for me but the furthest sticking out part of the tire is enough so I can't get my gate 100% up.
The rancher (420?) will be a bit smaller but with a 5' box it's pretty unlikely you will be shutting the gate either. Will it fit though, I bet it will maybe with some of the rear tires resting on the gate.

I've put a quad and a dirtbike in the back of my 6 foot bed. I've also put a quad and 2 dirt bikes in the back but you have to get crafty with that

Here's a dumb thought. A 4x4 Atv is a ton of weight on the cheap tailgate. I've always hated doing it that way. So I ended up going to tractor supply and spending 800 bucks for a 5 foot wide by 9 foot long trailer. Or something close to those dimensions, all I know is it's bigger than a full sheet of plywood. And I threw my Atv on there. It was super nice having the bed for all the muddy clothes. If the Atv was in the back you would be screwed for storing muddy gear
Also like others have said I would hate to bust out that class cause a 4x4 winch came threw my glass or a bumper

Here is a Honda Rancher in a 6ft bed for comparison. It stops just before the tailgate, but there isnt room to shut it. I lose about 4 inches in the front from the roll up tonneau, but that helps give a cushion between the front guard and the back glass.

It was a bitch and took alot of tie downs and planning but we made it happen. You put quad in first on its rear tires like doing a wheely, then you bring the bikes in. Have to pick up and shove the front tire next to the tire of the quad in between the wheel well on each side. Then tie down tie down tie down and bam done

I have the outlander 1000xt and wouldn't even think of putting that in the bed. Too heavy and wide with after market wheels.

turns out i didnt buy the rancher 4x4. it was too beat up and rusty for the price so im going to keep looking but this all helps a ton as i wouldnt even have thought of breaking the glass.

I've used one of these for years and they actually work perfect for not smashing your window out. In combination with straps of course. Although really any sort of wheel block will work.
